Vegan Children

Contributed by Sergio

I found this e-mail on vegan mailing list, and I was impressed by it, Andrea wrote: I'm new to the list but have been vegan/macrobiotic for 25 yrs. I have 2 sons that are now 20 and 21 yrs old, that were raised the same. My boys are 6'4" and 6'6" and about as healthy as they come.

The 21 yr old (6'6") hasn't had a cold in 5 yrs, never a cavity, has better than 20/20 vision and works out daily. He's also on a football scholarship at Western IL Univ. is 225 lbs and almost no body fat. He's majoring in forensic science and is holding a B average. The 20 yrs old (6'4") plays soccer for Concordia Univ., works out daily and is an education major and is holding a B+ average. He goes to school full time and works full time at the Early Childhood Dev. Ctr. at Concordia. Oh, and also is engaged to a wonderful woman he's living with now. I was vegan when I got pregnant with both and had 11 lbs 3 oz. and 10 lbs 7 oz babies! NOTE: I am 6 foot and my husband was 6'4" so the size of the babies are relative. ;) What I am saying is that my sons have never eaten meat and are healthy and happy and well developed physically, mentally and emotionally. And I think this IS DUE to the fact of them being vegan. I have to laugh at people that say that kids will be under developed due to a vegan lifestyle. I don't think their growth was stunted because of it, in any way, and am very proud of them. The thing is, you really have to make sure they are getting a good balanced diet when they're growing.......plenty of greens and protein. Also, I breast fed them both till they were 2 yrs old (yes, I was nursing 2 at once, and first nursed while I was pregnant with second and I had NO problems, I just had to eat ALOT!) Hope this info helps.
If you have any questions, please post them here, and I'll forward them to Andrea

This is a good story indeed. I always did kind of worry that size might be related to all the growth hormones present in dairy and meat products. Americans seem to be larger than most (not just fat-wise but tall-wise). For instance, Chinese Americans tend to be taller than native Chinese people, but that's always been secondhand evidence for me - not being Chinese or having been there. But my Chinese American friends have said that. Maybe just eating more food in general makes one taller.
