Korean embassies in the United States and Britain have recently sent letters to the home government to urge measures be introduced to prevent maltreatment of dogs ahead of the 2002 World Cup soccer finals, officials said yesterday.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare said yesterday that it received letters from the embassies requesting provision of adequate measures amid what appears to be growing criticism of Koreans for eating dog meat.
According to the letter sent by Korean diplomats in the U.K., about 170 British and Korean animal rights activists held a rally on July 16 in front of the Korean embassy in London protesting Korea's dog-eating culture and the conditions in which dogs destined for consumption are kept and tortured to death in the country.
